Sorry it’s late, work has been hectic as hell as of late and last night I was so damn tired I had a headache…a headache that’s still nagging me to this moment. Now if you’ll excuse me. I’m going to grab some Ibuprofin and lay down for a while T.T
I’m really proud of the art in this comic. Three years ago I never could have pulled this off. Hell, ONE YEAR ago this would have been a challenge. It just goes to show how far I’ve been able to progress. Everything just came together extremely well…oh well, enough patting myself on the back.
Hell MUST have frozen over…because AT&T let me out of my contract (that still had over a year left on it) for free of charge! I don’t even have to pay my last bill. O.o
Do you want out too? Well, here’s how you do it (applicable to people in the Jewett City Area ONLY)…
1. Call AT&T and ask to cancel your service, tell them all the awful service you’ve been getting.
2. Let them do their schpeil, when they’re done, ask them to transfer you to the tech department to inquire on the service area that you are in.
3. When you’re connected to the Tech department, tell them the trouble you’ve been having and that you want to inquire into your service area.
4. When they check, they will see that the area sucks ass and should tell you that you are free to leave if you like…you can even port your number to your new service, in fact, that’s when they will know to cancel your service and wave the fee.
Having said that, I’ve switched to VERIZON and so far I am very happy with it. Gots me a Blackberry too! Damn this thing is cool. It’ll be a lifesaver for work too, syncing all my events and meetings from my work calendar DIRECTLY to my phone!!! WOOT!
If THAT’S not cool enough, they gave me a free Bluetooth headset too! An $80 model at that.
A weeks worth of effort is almost done. Just waiting on Dan to get back with more footage.
I think it’s safe to say that this little experiment of mine is one of my better pieces, and DEFINITELY one of the best written of those pieces.
Tomorrow I’m gonna grab the interviewee and have her give it a once over, just to make sure she’s ok with what I wrote.
Basically I did the Documentary thing where you write using sound bytes, piecing bits together to construct a brand new sentence here and there. I didn’t make her say anything bad or change her meaning at all, so having her give it a once over is basically to see if she’s ok with the fact that I did edit her.
I can’t see it being an issue. There rarely is…people don’t tend to mind when you make them sound more eloquent and insightful while on-camera.
So BOTCON put out their pamphlet with the full list of figures in the boxed set. Aside from the ones we already know about we’re also getting Spark’s arch nemesis (who’s name escapes me at the moment) Clench, Freeway (another G2 unreleased combiner piece), and finally…and most importantly…SKYBYTE!!!!!!!!!
I don’t know why, but everyone seems to love that little shark dude and everyone, including myself, is busting over this news…at least, I can only assume. I’ve been at work for most of the day and hence can’t check the nerd feed on the TFW2005 forums.
Still, I’m stoked! Even if we get the predictable choice of the Sharkticon mold with an un-altered head (most likely) it’ll still be neat to see him in the Skybyte colors! And of course, let’s not forget the comic!!!! Ohhhhhh man. I’m really excited about this set now…and as much as I like last years set, this years looks like it’ll put it to shame!
Ok, so yesterday wasn’t chock full of writing like I expected it to be. I DID do some writing, but became pre-occupied with more active work like delivering equipment and such. Oh well, that’s how these things go, can’t complain.
I need to change my oil this weekend. But before I can do that I need to check my oil supply and see if I indeed have 5 quarts of oil. If not, it’s off to Target. Not a huge deal. Changing the oil is just one giant pain in the ass tho. What’s worse is that the grass is starting to grow as well, so I need to contemplate cutting it this weekend as well. In between all that, I have comic work to do and all the other lovely self-prescribed work I’ve given myself creatively.
I really need to write more AZA scripts. I have an idea for the next story I want to do, but I just haven’t gotten a chance to put it to paper yet, been too busy doing Exam-themed one-shots. Which have been fun, but I think I’ll be ready for a story again soon.
Still haven’t come up with a way to do the whole “TEAM DISCOVERY CHANNEL” thing for the “Trippy” project. I’ll let you know when I do. Once I have an idea I’ll start serious work on the script and story structure. I feel I have almost everything I need to start pulling something together. Just a few more songs and story elements to go with them.
I’ve only recently discovered how difficult it is juggling multiple projects at a single time. Sadly, one always suffers because of it. Today, it’s AZA’s art for Tuesday’s comic. It’s not terrible, but it’s not anything inspiring either. Usually I try to keep things interesting and dynamic, but this time it was one of those “I have little time and I’m burnt out from work Saturday” kinda situations where I forced myself to get it done. Hopefully the joke will make the art forgivable.
Straying from the topic a bit for a moment to continue a thought…I find that I’m becoming more and more creative in my joke writing, and better yet, clinging more and more to a less story driven structure…at least for the moment. Perhaps this is because all of the story I had written up until this point was either stuff with Shori or stuff that’s WAY off in the distance (for example, Brand needs to get a girlfriend for most of the stuff I have written), but also perhaps because I’m in need of more time than usual and writing story stuff it just too time consuming. I dunno…either way, it’s working for me at the moment so I’ll run with it.
Back to Juggling multiple projects…here’s a full list of what I’ve got on my plate right now creatively…this isn’t including work stuff which at the moment requires alot of script writing as well which tends to burn me out sadly…
"Trippy" Pre-Production work (concept art, style development, music selection, story structure, script writing)
BAT COUNTRY MEDIA official studio site
AZA 2010 HALLOWEEN SPECTACULAR (Script is done, just need to edit then off to FLASH…then hopefully off to my music guy.)
It’s starting to get overwhelming…I’d stop but I’m really trying to push myself creatively, because let’s face it…as good as I have it at MYSTIC SEAPORT (not counting the $$ situation, which is anything but my boss’s fault) I’m not working there forever. Besides, I’ve always loved telling stories, and so far the only one I’m telling is fictionalized versions of stuff that happened to me in college…not exactly what I would call “terribly creative.”
Hopefully when I get my Cintiq it’ll help organize things a bit. I’m banking on the idea that it’ll make the paper and pencil section of AZA unnecessary, and hopefully allow me to do the entire comic in Photoshop instead of illustrator. But then again, that all depends on how clean I can get the line-work to look. The entire reason I adopted the illustrator step was for the linework. That and vector graphics don’t distort when you try to re-size them.
All I can do is keep pushing myself, occasionally taking a breather for friends and video games and hope that when all’s said and done it pays off.
So right now the plan is to pay off all my credit cards within the next 4 months by wiping out my savings account. Before you say anything, I can assure you if my savings account anything more than what it is now (triple digits only T.T) I would wait.
This debt wipeage will free up an extra $200 a month, which not only provides more money for general enjoyment and necessities, but also gives me more money to set aside in my savings when I have a good pay week.
Now…here’s the thing…I really want that CINTIQ. I COULD buy it using my card and drop $100 a month on it which would still leave me with $100 extra a month.
I really want to…but the jury is still out.
On the one hand, it’s a great investment for me.
On the other hand, I’m a cheap bastard when it comes to buying things for myself, and that $2000 price tag is haunting my dreams.
I dunno…I’m sure I’ll end up getting it. I mean…seriously. If I don’t that $100 a month would most likely be spent towards my collection or eating out and such. I really only need a $100 for a buffer and to start paying the electric bill.
I know I bitch and moan about money alot, and it’s mostly because I don’t have that $100 or so comfort buffer for “just-in-cases” or if I get a REALLY bad pay week (ex. Student Loans, Credit Card, Cable, and Phone all in one paycheck usually means I’m dipping into the cat food for dinner that week…)
Having that CINTIQ would really be a shot in the arm for me. It would definitely up my productivity, save me on paper and pencils, and encourage me to try more dynamic work. Not to mention the fact that if I by some chance fall ass-backwards into some kind of commission-work or freelance design carreer (which I’ve been doing side work for people here and there for the past few years) I already have a much-needed serious piece of work equipment.
No matter what happens, my celebratory gift for me for paying off my cards is definitely going to be my very own Morpher Knight. He gets no love from any of my TF buddies, but I friggin love him. For godssake, he’s OPTIMUS PRIME as a STEAM ENGINE!!! HE’S STEAMPUNK PRIME!!!! How can you NOT love that?
Last night was like a Bachelor party…only no one’s getting married. It was so nice out my friends and I all piled out on the deck and played some poker, all while drinking beer and smoking fine cigars. When I die…that’s my heaven…with a massive unending shelf of TRANSFORMERS behind us of course…and it rains Slurpies…mmmmm Slurpies!
I rocked the first game hardcore…I didn’t win, but still, I had at least three flushes throughout the game! Insanity!!! …and then I lost out pretty quickly in the second game…still.
Tonight I’m going back over for some FALLOUT D&D gaming action! Awww YEAH! My character is such a dick in this game, and due to my awful rolling he can’t shoot for sh*t, but still, I enjoy him. I’m hoping this game he’ll be able to somewhat redeem himself enough to gain the trust back of his party…if only to get them off his back so he can get away with more mischief later on.
After a night of two cigars I wake up this morning to my mouth feeling pretty groady. Cotton mouth from the beer didn’t help much either. While I was at WALMART this morning I picked up some of that “Cherry Passion” tic-tacs to help me out. So far it’s like putting a band-aid on a bullet wound…but it’s helping at the very least.
I also picked up a 10 lbs dumbell. Such an obscure thing I know but I’ve been thinking about it for a while. Between my friends all working out and the fact that I’ve lost all this weight and see myself platauing off, it seems like a perfect time as any to tone up a bit…if only for the fact that my arms will no longer look like a Salvador Dahli painting…you know, the one with the watches hanging on the trees and stuff? Disgusting right? Yeah…so far I’ve avoided that but I’m still taking the preemptive strike.
I’m hungry…muffins maybe before lunch? mmmmmm Muffins…
This was the first discussion we had in my ART THEORY class…I’m pretty sure my professor didn’t like me at all after that class. While everyone else had some deep philisophical thing to say, whenever it was my turn the response was always the same…
I’ve caught alot of flack from friends for my criticism of JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRISIS ON TWO EARTHS, namely the fact that Batman knowingly and willingly kills two people…something very un-Batman-like.
Although I’ve touched upon their concerns in my FACEBOOK thread, I figured I’d expand upon them here…
Tim Burton’s Batman killed people…
Actually, if you watch the movie he never killed anyone. True, in the begining of the movie you hear thugs talking about the possibility, however Batman was always about striking fear and causing confusion, so this could be simply chalked up to paranoia. The two main contestants for him “killing people” would have to be the Joker and the Penguin.
The Joker’s death was accidental. To stop him from escaping, Batman tethered him to a gargoyle. However, by no fault to the Dark Knight, the gargoyle became loose and weighted him down eventually to his death. As for Penguin, all Batman did was sick a number of bats on him. Anything but a lethal attempt. It was the Penguin’s own confused and panicked fumbling that sent him over the edge.
Apparently I missed two scenes one from each movie…the first being a massive explosion of a chemical lab, and the second being a dynamite pack to the crotch…Damn.
Batman used to kill people in the comics, like, WAY back when…
Although that might be true, the simple fact is this. For years, once the character was defined and through every iteration from later comics to every last TV serial and movie (minus Batman Begins…ugh…><) one thing has always remained a constant for people to latch on to…”Batman DOESN’T kill people.”
After years of working on a single archetype of a character, you can’t simply change it and expect people to roll with you. A few examples that can be drawn upon is Optimus Prime in the REVENGE OF THE FALLEN movie, or the Simpsons drastic change in show structure to humor with heart to no humor and no heart. Imagine if all of a sudden after years of precedence Lucy actually let Charlie Brown kick the ball and all of the other characters simply stopped giving him crap for no apparent reason except that “In one of Schultz earliest iterations of the franchise, Charlie Brown wasn’t actually all that much of a loser, and was quite liked by people.” Or, to stay in the rhelm of comics, imagine Spider-man stopped giving a crap about things and furthermore, stopped being such a whiny bitch about every last goddamn thing that happened in his comics.
Essentially, my objection stems from the fact that the DC comic movies have been doing a great job of showing the “elseworld” stories and the different ways writers have portrayed the characters. For example, THE LAST FRONTIER’S Batman made sense because it was representative of the Batman that was portrayed in the graphic novel. If they had made this movie with the full intention of portraying a world from the old, old, old comics where he DID kill people I’d be fine. But clearly, they’re basing it off INFINITE CRISIS.
Furthermore…the issue is confounded even further by the fact that the next friggin movie (Batman: Under the Red Hood) deals with the very issue in contention…BATMAN DOESN’T KILL PEOPLE despite the fact that sometimes he wishes he could!! They even say as much in the mini-doc!!
Today during lunch I did some more sketches in the new style to try and find and work out the bugs still left in it. Yeah the concept art has been coming out ok, but the later ones aren’t as good as when I first started out and I think I’ve found out why…
1. Time- I’m rushing far too much. when I rush, it comes out looking like some stupid adolescent teen’s attempt at manga…which is the LAST thing I want to look like. I friggin hate manga now…its clogging the arteries of the illustrative and comic bodies. No one does their own style anymore >< Anyways, I digress, if I slow down, things come out exactly the way they should. So from now on I need to remember to take it slow and it will all come together…
2. Direct Contact- The more and more I do this, the more and more I realize that there is a HUGE difference between a tablet and working directly. I’m sure a Cintiq would help but frankly I don’t have that kinda money. Working directly isn’t as detatched as a tablet. While a table it great for tracing and other such precise work, I think that for this project, as with AZA, I need to work on paper first and then scan into illustrator for the rest.
I’m also thinking about pulling together a production team for this project. Basically a group of friends and people who’s creative opinion matters to me and letting them in on the juicy innards of the process, compiling their input and perhaps even taking some of their suggestions to heart. I haven’t figured out how this will work just yet, but it is something I’m working on. So if you happen to get an e-mail or Facebook request from something called “TEAM DISCOVERY CHANNEL” you’ll know what it’s about…other than a wicked awesome Simpsons reference.
One of my favorite responses to a Formspring question…
Would you rather be a zombie or a mummy?
Mummy, cause there’s no guess work. If you’re a mummy, you’re a goddamn mummy, that’s it.
If you’re a zombie then you have to specify if you are a traditional zombie, or a running zombie, a zombie from a virus and if so is it a mutant strain of something or is it a man-made thing, a zombie from voodoo, do you eat brains or just flesh? Can you use simple tools? Do you eventually mutate into some hideous monster? Etc. Etc. Etc.
