I’ve been watching A LOT of Kaiju films as of late…pretty much my entire Netflix DVD receivings as of late have been Kaiju. And yet, I have three or four Godzilla movies in my collection that need watching still.

At any rate…I’m discovering that there’s a reason Godzilla and Gamera are the more successful franchises. The other Kaiju films, at least the ones I’ve seen…just don’t hit that delicate balance of delightfully entertaining absurdity to keep them going.

Out of the last four I’ve seen…

FRANKENSTEIN VS BARAGON
ATRAGON
KING KONG ESCAPES
SPACE AMOEBA

…only two of them were really movies that I enjoyed watching. ATRAGON, while commendable for the absolutely badass subplot involving the captain stuck in WWII nationalism, just didn’t really do it for me like it should have been. It was about a flying submerine with a giant drill on the front and could shoot ice beams!! Or…at least, that’s what it was SUPPOSED to be about. Unfortunately, you spend most of the time with character drama…meh.

SPACE AMOEBA on the other hand, had this same character drama…but was balanced out with a giant squid walking on it’s tentacles on land…awesome.

KING KING ESCAPES had Mecha Kong…but they didn’t even fight that much. It was more of a chase than a fight even when they did…lame.

FRANKENSTEIN VS BARAGON had a Nazi captured frankenstein heart shipped off to a Japanese labratory in Hiroshima…the rest of the movie is forgivable just for this detail alone.

I dunno…maybe I’m asking for too much. Not everything can be as enjoyable as a good Godzilla film…with notable exceptions being WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS and RODAN of course. MOTHRA wasn’t too bad I guess either.

At any rate, I have to check, but I think THE MYSTERIONS is next on my cue…and that’s only because THE MUPPETS is a “blind purchase” for me, otherwise it’d be next on my list. Jason Segal has more than earned my money on blind faith alone.
