New Turtels Show: First Impressions
At first, I really wasn’t going to give this show the time of day. You know, “ignorance is bliss” and all that. But when I was sitting on the couch sorting my bookshelf and say it on the guide I figured…meh, why not.
I must say. I’m impressed.
The humor is solid, the casting (except Shredder) is very well done, and it’s just the right about of different to seem fresh without being a complete bastardization of the core basics of the source material.
The big changes so far are obviously the Kraang (aka the Utrons) but they’re cool, and quite a nice nod to previous fictions, and April…which is a little more…weird.
Basically, they made her a teenager in the show, which isn’t the problem. It’s actually kind of smart, it puts her and the turtles on an equal footing. It’s a dynamic that hasn’t been explored before and poses some great possibilities. HOWEVER…they’ve added a romantic component between her and Donatello.
Yeah…just a wee bit weird, for a number of reasons. That’s not to say it’s unprecedented if memory serves there was a run of comics where they were involved. It’s just that it’s teetering on some very dangerous territories here. You can’t put out of your head the whole human/giant mutant turtle thing. I’m not sure where they’re going with it…but my gut says they need to tread very carefully.
Bottom line. I’m intrigued, they have my attention. It gives the kid in me something new to look forward to from my favorite childhood franchise, and it doesn’t completely f*ck up the source material…which is all I ask of them.
