I’m reminded of the scene in TMNT where Splinter gushes about his soap opera characters…
"Ricky is going to break up with Donna, I just know it!"
Do you love Japanese stuff? J-List is a wonderful toybox of things from Japan, with hentai games, Japanese anime goods, doujinshi and manga, and more! You’ve got a friend in Japan!
Started watching this tonight…awwwwww yeah
Oh god…I just…love Japan so much sometimes
Just finished watching SUPER HERO JAPAN OH MY GOD IS THAT ALMOST EVERY LAST FRIGGING SUPER SENTAI AND KAMEN RIDER CHARACTER EVER: THE MOVIE (aka Super Hero Taizen Z.)
Seriously, this movie was insane. I’m impressed with how many they were able to get in there, but it did get silly at one point where people just showed up with random heroes.
"Oh yeah, we met Kamen Rider OOO on the way here, he needed a ride so I guess he’s going to help us out with this."
But I can’t really complain because I loved the sheer absurdity of it all.
Can we appreciate, for a moment, that Bragigas has no trouble getting around downtown because someone was forward-thinking enough to include wide stretches of roadway for sentai mecha.
This is a triumph of urban planning.
So, I got to thinking this morning…how come Japan puts more into their toy industry?
I mean, seriously. Take a look at the Sentai and Kamen Rider toys for a moment. Really think about it. There’s a lot of plastic in those things, a lot of sculpting work, a lot of paint detail, tons of complicated electronic gimmicks, and nearly everything has lights and sounds.
Hell…even their gumball machine toys are light years ahead from the cheap plastic crap we get here in the states. Stuff like, the same old bouncy balls, mood rings, sticky hands, that have existed since my parents were kids. Meanwhile in Japan, you have things like Giaa memories (Kamen Rider W) and Jyudenchis (Kyoryuger) that have working parts and sometimes even electronics.
Compare all that stuff to even the priciest toys we have in the states (playsets don’t count.) The only ones that come to mind are Transformers Supreme figures, and Star Wars Vehicles like the Giant Millenium falcon. Even those are special occurrences, they don’t happen often. But even so, they can’t compare to the Japanese stuff.
Does our culture simply not feel the need for such standards in our toys? Or is it a matter of cost? Perhaps a combination of both?
The wildcard in this argument is the Bandai of America Power Rangers toyline and it’s decline.
At first, they were almost straight imports. The only real difference was the stickers. I mean, the original Megazord and Dragonzord are pretty much the same thing as their Japanese counterparts. They were expensive as hell for us, but we bought them like hotcakes.
Soon, electronics were being scrapped (Ninja Falconzord,) molds changed (Samurai Megazord, Gosei Great,) scale was altered drastically (Drivemax Megazord) until you get to this point today where they won’t even reissue the original Megazord mold anymore. What we got for the anniversary was a heavily altered version of it.
Is it a change in economy? Or has our culture changed where such things no longer interest our children? I don’t pretend to know. But I find the question facinating.
Oh Japan…I love you so
Once again I find myself watching something because the internet demanded it…and by internet, I mean three or so twitter and YouTube peeps I follow. Of course, it was easier to get me to watch it because it was something I was already into at one point in college.
That’s right, I slinking back to things of my college days…which can be very dangerous territory. I was such a tool back then I try not to dwell on college stuff too often unless its some kind of memory that includes my friends…who I miss like hell btw.
Anyways…enough suspense, it’s KAMEN RIDER. Specifically, KAMEN RIDER KABUTO.
According to these individual, the one I need to be watching is KAMEN RIDER W, but, since I had a thing for KABUTO back in the day, I kinda wanted to finish this series first before I sought out others.
So far it’s just as delightful as I remember it…however, there are some thing that now bug the crap out of me now that the “Otaku Goggles” are off.
Let’s face it, when you’re an uber nerd of something, you tend to gloss over it’s shortcomings. In college, I was *shudder* an Otaku…so I was blinded to these little things. Now? They drive me nuts.
The biggest thing is how goddamn annoying Tendou’s sister is. My god…if that girl doesn’t shut up I’m likely to reach into the computer and shove that damn backpack of hers down her throat. The wimpy Zect agent isn’t much better, although from the looks of things, he does grow up a bit in the next episode, which is good because despite his annoyances I do feel for the guy.
Another thing that just weirds me out is a question that’s been nagging at me with each passing episode…
What kind of budget do they have for these shows???
Seriously…they’ve got CGI, explosions, dropping cars from cranes, 5 million costumes, tons of working props, custom built bikes…all for a KIDS’ SHOW!!
My god…is this what Japan does with their money???
…I’d complain, but…hell, it’s damn good entertainment.
