Started reading HARRY POTTER books today…time to see what the hubub is about
Just finished DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP and am very sad to say that this is a rare case where I would suggest skipping the book and watching the movie adaptation instead.
The book has a whole lot of awkward attempts at deep commentarys and metaphors that just don’t land.
In fact, the whole book is awkard. Every step of the way, to the point shere really nothing means anyrhing much at all in terms of story ir character development.
Deckard’s “arc” isn’t so much an arc as it is a roller coaster that has no departure point. You just keep going up and down up and down before eventually ending up right where you started with no closure whatsoever.
He hates androids, then he loves them, then he hates them again. He loves his job, then he hates it and wants to quit, then he doesn’t, then he does again before eventually becoming somewhat ambivalent towards it.
Then there’s the animals…what the hell is the point of it I can’t figure out. I get that its a status symbol and a form of wealth…but for the life of me I don’t get why.
As for the android hunting…its woefully unexciting and encounters are resolved in a matter of paragraphs.
It’s a shame really…
My advice? Watch the director’s cut and leave it be.
I’m reading THE RIGHT ASCENSION on my tablet…starting to realize why it was a free download.
“Fedorans are remarkably similar to humans…” except they have one arm, tentacles, a cylindrical torso, and live three times our normal lifespans.
Ummm…
Just finished reading NIGHT CIRCUS…how the hellbdid this become a best seller???
Whimsical? Yes.
Charming? Absolutely.
Deserving of a “best seller” status and praise? Hell no.
The author takes forever to get the story going, you have no real connection to any of the secondary characters so that when they are killed off you feel nothing, and you are given so little detail about the “plot” that there is no conflict to derive drama or engagement from so the entirety of the book up until page 250 feels like a gigantic waste of time.
Shame…beneath it all the author is quite good as far as prose goes…storytelling, pacing, character development, and efficiency in writing, not so much.
My Kindle books. So far I have yet to pay a cent for ebooks, and yet the bounty of l literature I have found for free has yet to disappoint me
Got my first draft back from my editor and I actually quite agree with the criticisms. Now, this speaks nothing about my editor…quite the opposite as I greatly appreciate and respect her opinion. Bur rather it speaks greatly to the fact that I am a rather opinionated individual and usually don’t take any kind of criticism quite so gracefully.
Everything that was said I completely agree with, and no part of me felt the familiar burn of…whatever you call it, protectiveness of my own creation? I don’t know. Either way, I’m happy that I had that response because now I am able to really listen to the opinion of someone else for a change, and more importantly, someone else who knows more about the subject than I.
I’ve already started thinking about what I want to do. Small changes here, big changes there…now it’s just a matter of time to wait for the the viewpoint from my other friend who’s been asked to give me his opinion as a reader.
I’m hoping that these two viewpoints will give me a complete idea of what I’m missing, what I need to do for my story both technically, as well as creatively.
THIS F*CKING GUY!!!
YESSSSSSSSS KEEP A TRACK OF WHICH ONES ARE THE SCARIEST SO I CAN RE-READ THEM AND PISS MYSELF. I always thought the first one was so scary.
I can do you one better! I just so happen to have doubles of two of my favorite ones if you are interested.
Guess what I’m reading…
